Up with the bean canes! Yesterday I sowed beetroot seeds by the greenhouse.

Snake’s Head Fritillary in the front garden:

Can’t believe it is two months since I last posted to this section. Have cleaned out the greenhouse and ready to clean it. Have bought sulphur candles to try out. Having looked at them I am not sure why they cost so much! Have cleaned up the herb garden and asparagus plot. These still need work before spring but at least it is looking better.
November 27th 2011
Pruned the soft fruit.
Cut down the asparagus.
November 5th 2011
Cleared tomatoes and cucumbers from greenhouse and ate six of the cape gooseberries which are delicious and, triffid like, have taken over much of the available space.
October 16th 2011
Beans at an end, pigeons are having a go at the broccoli and kale. Tomatoes are coming to an end.
Excellent beetroot, spinach, courgette crops this year.
August 3rd 2011
Crops from the greenhouse have been very good. Loads of salad and three cucumbers so far, apart from early kale and all the plants and vegetables I have started off there.
But today I celebrate the first greenhouse tomato.

Does any one know anything about Goji berries? My bush is growing like a triffid.
July 16th
So many courgettes….
Loads of mange tout.
Tons of spinach.
Tonnes of potatoes!
A few runner beans appearing despite the maggot problem earlier this year.
Tidied and cleaned the strawberries and put them back out into the garden. They worked well in the greenhouse, as has the salad.
Really must sort out the herb garden and decide what to do with the kale and broccoli plants.
June 2nd
Planted out leeks this week.
Having lost most of my runner beans to deadly maggots I bought a ‘green” biological warfare product to kill them off (the maggots not the few remaining beans). I am hoping this works as no one seems to know exactly what they are. Planted out the few spare beans I had in pots and planted some more bean seeds.
I have dug up one of the blueberries and put it in the greenhouse. It has lost nearly all its leaves and this might be because the roots are too damp. I will try to help it recover before putting it back out in the garden.
All the tubs are now planted up with flowers I grew from seed in the greenhouse.
Had some rain at last.
May 10th
Asparagus continues to grow furiously. Made some asparagus soup today.
Planted out some stocks (very weak seedlings) and some straw flowers. Getting ready to plant out flower pots for patio.
I planted out the following in the greenhouse:
- Cucumber
- Melon
- Aubergine
- Tomatoes
- Sweet red peppers
- Cape gooseberries.
It is ridiculous that I had to go on line because seed packets did not give the overall height of plants and this information was needed to decide where to plant things.
May 9th
Over the last week I have planted out the following, all grown in the greenhouse:
- Runner beans
- Kale
- Broccoli
- Red onions
- Courgettes.
Thinned parsnips and mounded potatoes. Carrots coming on slowly in bins and spinach beet needs thinning.
May have lost some of the runner beans in the drought so may need to replace. I have some spares.
One blueberry is looking poorly – think it is because we have been too ‘kind’ to it and over watered.
Kale April 25th 2011
If half the seeds in my greenhouse continue to thrive I need a bigger garden The only seeds that are not germinating are hot chillis, which cost me about 50p each! Had to take my Goji berry bush back to the garden centre – it was definitely not going to grow any green shoots. I am waiting for a replacement.
Bay and fig trees are recovering – I thought I had lost them in the cold weather.

Well – nearly there. All the glazing finished – just have to cement in the ground anchors and put in the staging plus 4 autovents that we are waiting to have delivered. Sooooooooo (sic) pleased with ourselves. Final picture coming soon.
March 21st 2011
Tightened all the braces – about to start on the doors. First piece of glass.

March 20th 2011
Started erecting the greenhouse yesterday -made pleasing progress without pressurising myself. It is like a giant meccano set – fantastic. I must say Rhino have done a fantastic job with materials and instructions. Tomorrow hope to finish the roof and make the door, then all is left is the glazing! Even momentary panic about missing box on Saturday and following phone call with sales people was dealt with very well. Picture below.

March 11th 2011
Cleared the base of the Yew hedge down one side of the back garden to make way for the daffodils I planted a couple of years ago.

Feb 18th 2011
Trench filled in and soft fruit planted. Raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, blueberries (in acid compost) and two vines. We pegged out area for greenhouse.
Jan-Feb 2011
Digging trench by the fence in the vegetable garden. Idea- mainly to plant soft fruit along fence and reduce impact of roots from neighbouring trees. We are also preparing for the greenhouse we have just bought.

Nov 2010
Needed to remove trunk of old cherry in preparation for the installation of greenhouse. Accidentally on purpose B managed to set light to it and over a period of nearly two days it burnt down.
